The internal combustion engine is often considered to be a large air pump. As the part of the engine where airflow is most critical, the cylinder head is key to the performance of an engine. The shape of the combustion chamber, intake ports and passages (and to a lesser extent the exhaust) determines a major portion of the volumetric efficiency and power output of the engine.
